LOS ANGELES—Shulamit Nazarian will host a conversation with artist Fay Ray and César García, Founding Executive & Artistic Director of The Mistake Room on May 19th. The talk will address major themes in Ray’s current exhibition, I AM THE HOUSE, as well as her continued interest in the fetishization of objects and the construction of female identity through monochromatic photomontages and suspended metallic sculptures.

Fay Ray (b. 1978, Riverside, CA) received her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 2002, and her MFA from Columbia University in 2005. She has exhibited at galleries within the US and internationally, including Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles (2016 & 2018); Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris (2016); Louis B James Gallery, New York (2016); JOAN, Los Angeles (2015); Honor Fraser Gallery, Los Angeles (2012); and Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills (2011) and New York (2007). Her works have been featured in Artforum, LA Times, Artillery, and Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles, among others.

Since 2014, César García is the Founding Executive & Artistic Director of The Mistake Room (TMR)—LA’s international non-profit contemporary art space. He previously served as Associate Director and Senior Curator of LAXART and as US Commissioner for the 13th International Cairo Biennale. Garcia was one of the curators of Made in L.A. 2012—the first LA Biennial organized by the Hammer Museum and LAXART and, with Ute Meta Bauer, one of the curators of the first cycle of The Current, TBA21’s triennium. At TMR Garcia has organized solo exhibitions and projects with Oscar Murillo, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Vivian Suter, Thomas Hirschhorn, Mandy El-Sayegh, Henry Taylor, Eduardo Sarabia, Tuan Andrew Nguyen, and others.
